Nineteen

With heavy rain that continued for hours, everyone was on edge. Nicole could feel the tension in the air as if it was the tension instead of the rain that was beating down on them with oversized droplets. No one spoke and no one dared to. It wasn’t like they could hear each other over the thunder and downpour anyways. So, they walked in silence.

Reaching the edge of the forest, they paused before entering. The forest was supposed to offer them food, but with the insistent rain, all of the creatures were hidden. Nicole’s stomach grumbled in protest and she clenched her teeth against a kind of pain she had never known before. She pulled up her dress although it was no use since it was already muddy and torn at the bottom.

Nicole stumbled forward, tripping over a branch and falling into a puddle of mud. She cursed under her breath. Before she could stand, Landon was by her side, pulling her to her feet. She fell into his arms letting him hold her up against his body so she could feel the warmth of his skin seeping through their clothes.

“Are you okay?” Landon almost had to yell the question even though she was right next to him.

Nicole nodded, but she wasn’t feeling convinced. “I’m tired, and I’m hungry.” She yelled back, slightly too loud.

The others turned to look at her, hearing what she had said. “Aw, the princess is hungry.” Talia’s voice mocked her from behind Landon.

Normally Nicole would have just ignored the comment, pretended that she hadn’t heard it over the roar of the thunder, but she wasn’t in the mood to play games. “What is your problem?” She shoved Landon out of the way so there was no one in between her and the dark haired girl.

“Obviously, it’s you.” Talia was about to take another step toward her when Tristan grabbed her arm, holding her back and before Nicole could match her step, Landon and Devon were at her side and Noah was coming in between them with Lexi, Ashley, and Nerissa scattered around them, ready to jump in at any moment.

“And what are you going to do about it?” Nicole challenged her, feeling her blood boiling inside her skin. Suddenly, she didn’t feel cold. She was burning up.

“I’ll just use my imagination.” When Talia smirked it sent a shiver running down Nicole’s spine. There was an almost playful grin to Talia’s smile, but it was sick and cruel. Nicole didn’t care what the others said. She didn’t like Talia, and she certainly didn’t trust her.

Nicole glared at her, and until her knuckles started to ache did she realize that she was fiercely gripping her sword. Landon’s hand slid down against her arm and she loosened her grip. His hand was warm as his fingers interlaced with hers and she swapped out the sword with Landon’s hand. Then his lips were by her ears, whispering into them, and she was surprised to find that she could hear him even with the storm.
